Queen Mary's High School at Upper Forster Street, Walsall, WS4 2AE. Also on Littleton Street East and Lichfield Street.

 

In brief

The Grammar School was founded by Queen Mary I in 1554, it was rebuilt in 1849. The current building dates to 1850 by the architect Edward Adams. Built in "Tudorbethan" style of red Flemish bond brick with stone dressings. The current High School was founded in 1893. A selective girls' grammar school and founding member of The Mercian Trust.

Queen Mary's High School - history

Queen Mary I founded a Grammar School in Walsall in 1554, originally a boy's grammar school.

The school was divided into two parts in 1838 with one part the grammar school, the other part a commercial school.

From 1847, the school occupied the grandstand of the town's racecourse, then in 1850 moved to the present premises designed by Edward Adams, a local architect and former pupil of the school.

By 1873, the school's property was vested in the charity commissioners and it became non-denominational.

From the same date, girls were educated in an adjacent building called Queen Mary's High School for Girls.

A separate boys school was built in 1965 at Mayfield, and the buildings were handed over to the girls' school.

The school was re-founded in 1893 as a selective girls grammar school and was a founding member of the Mercian Trust.

The original buildings of the 1850s are described as been built in the Tudorbethan style, of red-Flemish bond brick with stone dressings and a plain tile roof.

There was later additions built during the 20th century.

Queen Mary's Grammar School Buildings was Grade II listed in 2005.
